Does waxing hurt? The most common question asked and understandably so. To answer transparently, we can’t quite compare it to a walk on the beach. However, between the techniques we’ve developed and the high quality of products used, we’re sure to make the experience as painless as possible for you. It’s also important to keep in mind that everyone has a different pain tolerance. What may be uncomfortable for one guest may be a breeze for the other. In addition, the more you wax the easier it gets as the hair regrows thinner and sparser than before (which means the roots aren’t nearly as strong).
-
What kind of wax do you use?At Sirens & Sailors, we like to cocktail our wax to our services. We use a combination of low temperature soft Italian cream wax and hypoallergenic hard wax. Our high quality professional waxes are ideal for even the most sensitive skin types, regardless of hair coarseness.
-
How long should my hair be before waxing?Unlike most places, we actually prefer to measure the hair based off of hair cycles. Meaning, we recommend a minimum of 3-4wks of growth since your last shave or trim (or 4-6wks since your last wax). There are multiple hair cycles to keep into consideration and the encouraged growth time ensures you’ll get the smoothest and longest lasting results leaving you as smooth as a pearl.

I take medication, will that matter regarding my wax?It is extremely important that your esthetician is made aware of any medications you are taking and/or any skin products you are using prior to any and all waxing service(s). This can ensure a safe and successful waxing experience. If you are currently using any of the following prescription medications, you cannot safely receive a waxing service. Discontinued use of these medications for a minimum of three (3) months is required prior to waxing (the exception is Accutane: You MUST be off this medication for a minimum of one (1) year prior to waxing): • Accutane (Acne medication) • Adapalene (Acne medication) • Alustra (Retin A) • Avage (Acne medication) • Avita (Retin A) • Azelex (Peeling agent) • Clindamycin • Differin (Acne medication) • Doxycycline • Erythromycin • Isotretinoin (like Accutane) • Madifloxicine (Nadifloxacin) • Metronidazole • Prednisone • Renova (Retin A) • Retin A (Acne and Anti-aging medication) • Tazorac (Acne medication) • Tazarotene (Tazorac) • Tetracycline • Tretinoin (Retin A) In the event you have used any of the aforementioned medications within the last three (3) months, we need to talk, please call or text us at (702) 908-9097 prior to booking an appointment. Thank you. If you are taking medication, or using a product that has changed your skin in any way and are unsure about the safety of waxing, please talk to your doctor first! Hopefully we can work together to make your waxing experience a great one!

Can I get waxed if?...USE EXTREME CAUTION If you are using any of the following. The following products can make your skin more sensitive. Thin, sensitive skin is more vulnerable to lifting and sensitivity during (and after) waxing. Other acne medications not listed above Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Lactic) Antibiotics (both Oral and Topical) Any acid based products Exfoliants Retinol/Retinal Salicylic Acids These medications/ingredients, and any topical derivative of Vitamin A, accelerates your cellular turnover rate. This is a direct contraindication to waxing and can potentially result in live skin cells being removed (aka "lifting") as well as the dead skin cells & hair which we never want you to experience if we can avoid it! This is why it's very important to please let your esthetician know immediately if you are on any medications/using any products with the above ingredients. It is strongly recommended you are not using any Retinol skincare products (and/or skincare products meant for acne-prone skin) for at least 10 days prior to waxing. Also be aware that chemical peels, laser, and micro-dermabrasion can also affect skin integrity prior and post waxing.

Will I have pictures taken of me?Upon your first visit at Sirens & Sailors, we will have you fill out our Consent to Wax forms, this includes our Photo Release. (You do have an option to opt out of said Photo Release). However, we try to encourage our guests to allow us to use their before & after's to further market ourselves and help our growing small business. (You never know, it might sway another nervous first-timer to take the dive and try that first wax!) Your information is always kept confidential, we will not tag you, nor reveal your personal information on any images posted to our social media accounts. Whether it's your first visit with us, or your 500th, when it comes to taking before & after photos *especially intimate areas*, we will ALWAYS ask first if you are comfortable. If that is a yes, we will ALWAYS take censored photos. And if you're simply not comfortable, that is shorely acceptable too!

Why wax instead of shaving, laser or electrolysis? When waxed consistently, hair grows back slower, finer and sparser. Shaving cuts your hair, it doesn’t remove your hair—so the quantity and thickness remain the same. Electrolysis and laser hair removal don’t work for everyone, which makes waxing a fabulous universal alternative. Those treatments are also very expensive, which makes waxing a great option that’s far kinder to your treasure trove (bank account).
-
How long will results last?Because waxing allows the hair to be removed fully, by the root, you’ll get to enjoy a minimum of 1-2 weeks completely hair-free. Unlike shaving, where you’re cutting the hair at the thickest part, the hair shaft, you get that pesky stubble almost immediately (not to mention razor burn, yikes).
-
I’m nervous. Is there anything I should do before my wax appointment? We understand that taking the dive on for your first wax experience can be nerve-racking. Those pre-wax jitters are completely normal and we strive to keep you comfortable throughout your experience from start to finish. To help prepare, it’s best to avoid any and all caffeine and nicotine at least 4 hours before your wax appointment. These substances tend to constrict your blood vessels which can result in heightened sensitivity. Lastly, feel free to take a couple ibuprofen approximately 30 min prior to reduce any possible inflammation you may experience.
-
I'm nervous, can I bring a friend to accompany me?IN SUITE PRIVACY For safety and liability reasons, we do not allow additional guest(s) (such as friends, family members, spouses, significant others, etc.) in the service room while services are being rendered unless: • they are a parent/legal guardian required to attend & remain present for the entire duration of their minor(s) receiving service(s).
-
What if I'm a minor? Can I get waxed?MINORS, Guests under the age of 18: Must disclose they’re a minor upon booking under “appointment notes”. All minors are required to have their legal parent/guardian present in-suite, at each of their service(s), no exceptions. Sirens & Sailors Wax requires both parent and minor to sign our Guest Info & Consent Forms as well as Policy Forms. Most services may be performed on guests from 12-17 years of age. Some service areas may be restricted to minors depending on age such as: Intimate Waxing: Age(s) 12-15 – Bikini Only* Age(s) 16-17 – Betweeny or Brazilian* *parent/legal guardian required to be present in-suite throughout the entire duration of each appointment, no exceptions.
-
Can I get waxed if I’m on my period? The simple and sweet answer is Yes. However, because of your change in hormones you may be a bit more on the sensitive side. If you do happen to be on your period at the time of your wax, all you’ll need is a fresh tampon or menstrual cup inserted prior to service and it will be smooth sailing from there on out. (Complimentary tampons are provided in salon) Please keep in mind, as unexpected as Aunt Flo can be at times, our 48hr cancellation/reschedule policy is still in effect and does not excuse out of late cancellations/reschedules. If it's too difficult to know when your period may arrive, we recommend downloading a period tracking app to help or wait prebooking far in advance.
-
I’m pregnant, is it safe to wax?Unless specified otherwise by your physician, Yes, you can absolutely get waxed while you’re pregnant and leading up to your delivery date. As your safety and comfort is a top priority to us, we will do our best to wax you before and after your little one arrives. After delivery, discuss the recommended time with your doctor on when you can safely resume your waxing services.
-
Is waxing sanitary?Yes, waxing is absolutely sanitary. Not only do we sanitize and disinfect using hospital-grade disinfectants, we NEVER EVER double dip our waxing sticks!! Between each guest we “flip our room”, meaning we thoroughly clean and disinfect all surfaces and implements that were in use to the guest prior. Additionally, there is complimentary hand sanitizer available at all times. We take safety of cleanliness and sanitation VERY seriously at Sirens & Sailors Wax.
-
Will my hair grow back thicker or darker?A common misconception that often gets asked to this day. Waxing will do just the opposite. Because we are removing the hair from the follicle by the root, it will grow back softer, thinner & sparser over time. Although, keep in mind that Consistency is Key to achieve these desirable results. Making sure you are rebooking within the timeframe your wax specialist recommends will help significantly in the long run!
-
Can I shave or trim just a little bit between appointments?Unless you want to walk the plank, do NOT shave or trim between waxes. Because we are synchronizing your hair cycles with each wax, it’s crucial to keep the razor and trimmers away.
-
Can I tan before or after my wax appointment? In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours before and after your wax. Waxed skin is more photosensitive and is more susceptible to burning. If you arrive at your appointment with a sunburn, regardless of severity, we cannot and will not wax you for your skin's integrity has been compromised. Even faux-tanning is something to consider avoiding right before AND right after your waxes. If you "tan" too soon before your wax, we will end up removing said "tan" upon your wax. If you decide to "tan" post wax, your risk of clogged pores, splotchy dots, and irritated skin increases. Giving your skin time to recover for a couple days after each wax is always good to keep in mind!
-
Anything I should do or NOT do after my wax? Any expectations in particular?Your skin may be sensitive following your wax, this is completely normal. In the event you happen to experience any slight pink "blushing" or skin irritation, it subsides within a few hours for most. Some possible side effects include, but are not limited to, redness, tenderness, swelling, itching, hives and bumps. However, these possible side effects are temporary and generally fade within 48-72 hrs. After a fresh wax, it is extremely important for the next 24-48hrs post wax: • No touching, itching, or picking at freshly waxed skin • No swimming, pools, saunas, hot tubs, jacuzzi or soaking bodies of water • No workouts or sexual activity for at least 24hrs (preferably 48hrs) post wax • Avoiding heavy oils, lotions or creams that are not recommended by my esthetician • Avoiding makeup on freshly waxed areas • Avoiding direct sun exposure over freshly waxed areas as the skin becomes photosensitive (more likely to sunburn). In the event you have no choice to sun exposure, try your best to shade the freshly waxed skin as much as possible & wear SPF • No tanning, peels, or further deep exfoliating professional treatments for at least 48hrs Your skin's freshly exfoliated & your hair follicles are completely open & exposed as a direct result from waxing. We do not want to risk any bacteria to enter the skin. Keep in mind, in order to get the best results waxing has to offer, it is not the kind of service you can just "get done" with no aftercare maintenance. Your Wax Captain is here to assist you navigate your voyage of at-home After Care & is happy to help answer any question you may have regarding. *Sea INGROWN PREVENTION below for more details!*

How can I prevent ingrown hairs? One of the many perks waxing has to offer is softer, thinner & sparser regrowth with long-lasting results (what a WIN!). However, because our regrowing hair is much softer & thinner, it needs additional assistance to be sure it's growing up and out of our skin, rather than getting trapped underneath dead skin cells causing, what we call, ingrown hairs. With that being said, once those initial 48hrs after your wax has passed, you’ll want to start implementing gentle exfoliation (2-4x a week, every week) & moisturization (daily) into your routine leading all the way up to your next wax. There are many different skin types and exfoliation isn't necessarily a "one-size-fits-all". At Sirens & Sailors Wax, we carry MANY different forms of exfoliation for our guests & will gladly refer you to which product in-suite we believe will benefit your specific concern AND skin-type. EXFOLIATION For our "basic 101 post-wax exfoliation" that's universal for most skin types: We recommend using our S&S Body Brush 2-4x a week in small, gentle, circular motions to keep dead skin cells at bay (this is your physical exfoliation). You can use it in your shower or with no soap & no water (we call this Dry Brushing). If you do decide to wet your brush, be sure to spray it with alcohol after every other use to keep it disinfected, hang dry & replace every 6 months. Another of our favorite go-to's in preventing ingrowns is our Smooth Operator Ingrown Serum from the one & only Just The Strip. Smooth Operator (a gentle chemical exfoliation) comes in a roll-on applicator or in individual pad form (45ct in Dreamsicle Scent). This serum contains a blend of salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acid which draws out excess oil and bacteria out of the pores, working from the inside out to keep your skin clean. This directly assists in preventing, healing and treating ingrown hairs that can occur from shaving, waxing, laser hair removal or electrolysis. Best used on clean skin after showering. Do you like the feel of scrubs? Us too! Good news for you, we also carry Just The Strip's The Polisher Bikini/Body Scrub. Enriched with powerful ingredients like glycolic and lactic acids, as well as antioxidant-rich pecan shell powder, this scrub gently removes impurities and dead skin cells, revealing a radiant complexion that's sure to turn heads. *Another perk: It's safe for our pregnant/breastfeeding guests!* And did we mention it comes in the natural & lightly fragrant Dreamsicle aroma?! MOISTURIZING Lastly, finish off your daily routine with Just The Strip's best-selling Nourishing Oils, a lightweight non-comedogenic oil blend with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that deeply moisturize your skin AND soften the hair follicle for easy removal come your next wax (this is your recommended moisturizing agent). Keeping your skin moisturized is just as important as keeping your skin exfoliated! Dry and dehydrated hair is much more likely to break causing ingrowns... We want to prevent this and let the hair slip out with ease on each pull. We strongly encourage all our guests to moisturize daily! We never expect for perfection, however, we always strive for progress... If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask your wax specialist as we are always more than happy to help you on your waxing voyage.
